History of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Over a century ago, Mercedes-Benz recognized the need for a vehicle that could take on heavy loads and not back down from any job - and the cargo van was invented. As the usage of commercial vans increased over the decades, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has evolved into the leading vehicle in its class. While the latest Sprinters continue to raise the bar for commercial vans, they also continue to deliver an extraordinary level of performance, durability, and safety to everyone.

This innovative and evolutionary spirit is as strong as ever when it comes to the Sprinter Vans. Here's a timeline of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van's brief yet influential history:

  • 1995 - The first-generation Sprinter Van launches in Europe and wins "International Van of the Year."

  • 2001 - The Sprinter debuts in the U.S. markets. It was sold under the Mercedes brand name until 2003, after which the vehicle featured Dodge branding.

  • 2006 - The second-generation Sprinter hits the European market. Known as the New Concept Van 3 (NCV3), this iteration met with positive reviews and was named Van of the Year 2007 and 2008 by Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine.

  • 2007 - The NVC3 entered the U.S. market in 2007. The cargo version boasted the following configurations: two wheelbase options (144-inch and 170-inch), tow weight classes (2500/3500), two roof heights (standard and high), and three lengths.

  • 2014 - A Sprinter unveils new iteration of the second-generation

  • Van. The upgrades included new interior and exterior design elements and innovative safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive high beams, crosswind stabilization, and collision avoidance. Additionally, there was a choice of two engines - a 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel with seven-speed automatic or a 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel with a five-speed automatic along with various configurations.

  • 2020 - The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is the only vehicle in its class that comes with a four-wheel-drive system. The latest iteration boasts 21 different variations with a range of body styles, wheelbases, driver-assist features, and best-in-class payload capacity. In fact, you can choose from 21 variations of the Sprinter cargo van and ten versions of the passenger van.
